The thing underneath the thing

Hi Reader,

I had a client who came to me for gut issues. Bloating, irregularity, the whole picture.

One of the first things I do with every client is map their timeline - laying their life stressors alongside their physiological history to see where the two intersect. It's one of the most revealing parts of the functional medicine-led intake process, and most people have never been asked to look at their health that way before.

When we mapped hers, it was immediately clear: her symptoms had started the same year her marriage ended.

She hadn't connected those two things. Nobody had ever asked her to.

I've seen this pattern more times than I can count. And I've lived it too - my mom was diagnosed with stage IV cancer just one year after she retired. Almost as if her body had been bracing for decades, holding everything together through sheer force of will, and the moment she finally stopped - it gave out.

I'm not saying it's always that linear. But I've seen it enough to know: the body keeps score.

Emotional history - unprocessed grief, chronic stress, relationships that cost you your nervous system regulation - lives in the tissue. It shows up as inflammation. Pain that migrates. A gut that won't settle. A body stuck in fight-or-flight long after the threat has passed.

This isn't abstract. This is physiology.

The Neuro-Endocrine-Immune axis — the communication network between your nervous system, hormones, and immune response — is exquisitely sensitive to psychological input. What your mind holds, your body carries.

That doesn't mean your symptoms are "in your head." It means they're in your whole system. And healing has to be too.

The question I hold for every client:
What has your body been asking for that your mind hasn't yet heard or acknowledged?

Something to sit with.

With love + care,
Lisa

Hi Reader, I want to ask something that might sit uncomfortably for a minute: What stories are you telling about your body that your body is now living out? "I've always had a slow metabolism.""Anxiety just runs in my family.""I'm someone who doesn't sleep well." I'm not dismissing the reality of these experiences. They're real. But there's a point where a description becomes an identity - and identity has physiology. When you believe, at a cellular level, that your body doesn't work right -...

Hi Reader, What if the exhaustion isn't just tiredness? What if the weight isn't just about food? What if the brain fog, the mood shifts, the feeling of running on empty no matter how much you rest - what if those aren't random? In years of working with women on their health, I've noticed something: The body doesn't malfunction quietly. It escalates. It starts with a whisper: low energy, mild bloating, a mood that's harder to lift. When we don't respond, it gets louder. We've been taught to...

Hi Reader, I'll be honest with you - I'm nervous. Tomorrow morning I'm walking into a room of 70 people to deliver my first paid corporate wellness talk (!!!). And while I've done enough of this work to know the content deeply, I've also done enough inner work to know that nerves don't mean you're not ready. They mean you care. I also hold something else about tomorrow that I'm still a little in awe of. The company that hired me - I buried my mom at one of their locations just a month before...
